The Municipal Towns

Inland are the municipality's main towns, Adeje and Arona. Adeje, the former seat of the Guanche government, has never minded much how it made money. At the top of the town is the remains of the Casa Fuerte, the stronghold of Pedro, Count of Gomera and one of the Genoese de Ponte family, who ruled the roost along this coast. He fell in with another rogue, the Elizabethan pirate John Hawkins, and together they conducted illegal trade with South America, as well as legitimately dealing in African slaves. Hawkins, who was later knighted for his role in defeating the Spanish Armada, was the first Englishman to become involved in the slave trade, in 1562. The town has a pleasant, if steep Rambla, lined with bars and cafés, that leads to the Iglesia Santa Ursula, with a Gobelins tapestry among its contents and an 18th-century chapel that was once part of a Franciscan convent.

Turn left at the top of the Rambla for the Casa Fuerte, and then up to Otelo, the restaurant at the entry point to the Barranco del Infierno (tel: 922 78 28 85; daily 8.30am–2.30pm; charge; visitors are advised to reserve in advance as numbers to the gorge are limited to 220), one of the most dramatic ravines on the island and the main reason that so many visitors come to the town. Stout shoes and at least 1 litre of water per person are needed for the round-trip walk up to the waterfall at the head of the barranco, which takes around three hours. There is a surprising amount of plant life along the way. If nothing else, this walk can give those staying at the main resorts a flavour of the island's true nature.
